What is 71 Hockey?
71 Hockey is a skill development program focused on helping players improve skating, puck control, hockey IQ, and overall confidence. Our training is built around modern player-development principles used at the highest levels of the game.
Who are the programs designed for?
Our programs are designed for all players, including House League, Select, MD, A/AA/AAA and Junior level players. We group players by age and skill level to ensure appropriate development and challenge.
What areas of the game do you focus on?
We place a strong emphasis on:
- Confidence with and without the puck
- Skating mechanics and edge control
- Puck protection and puck control
- Small-area decision making
- Hockey sense and on-ice awareness
For private lessons, we can tailor programs based on players needs.
Do players need to be at a certain skill level to join?
No. We work with players at different stages of development. As long as a player is motivated and willing to learn, we can tailor coaching to help them improve.
How are sessions structured?
Sessions are fast-paced and high-repetition, combining power-skating, skill drills, small-area games, and situational play. This approach maximizes puck touches while keeping players engaged and challenged.
Where are sessions held?
Ice sessions are held at local arenas, including Vollmer Arena and Forest Glade Arena, depending on the season and program. Exact locations and schedules are provided before each session block begins.
How many players are on the ice per session?
We limit group sizes to ensure quality instruction and individual feedback. This allows coaches to give players more attention while keeping drills efficient and competitive.
Does 71 Hockey offer team programs?
Yes. We offer spring/summer teams, development skates, and team-based training programs. These include structured practices and tournament opportunities depending on the program.
Can my child try a session before committing?
In many cases, yes. We’re happy to arrange a trial skate or evaluation when space allows so we can ensure the program is a good fit for your player.
